United Way’s “Bison-tennial Art Project” celebrates Indiana’s 200th year

"Monty the Bison" on display at Tim's Muffler & Auto Outlet.

As Indiana’s bicentennial is celebrated this year across the state, the United Way of Fayette County will pay homage locally with its “Bison-tennial Art Project.

United Way of Fayette County, in cooperation with the Indiana Association of United Way, celebrates the Hoosier State's 200th year with this public art project, the first of its kind in the United States. Throughout Fayette County this year, a five-foot tall Bison statue was displayed by local business that sponsored the project. An American bison is featured in the foreground of the pioneer-era scene depicted on the Seal of the State of Indiana.

The UWFC has commissioned Whitewater Valley Arts Association to paint the statue. The WVAA nicknamed the statue "Monty" because of the montage of images displayed on the statue and depicting images from Fayette County's rich history. Indiana became the 19th state to join the union on December 11, 1816.

"Monty" on display at St. Gabriel Catholic Church.
